Upshur Rec Park’s new disc golf course is ready for frisbee golf enthusiasts to tee off

TENNERTON – The new disc golf course at the Upshur County Recreational Park has been completed.

Upshur County Parks and Recreation Director Adam Brumley said the signage, poles and baskets have been installed throughout the park. The first tee is right behind the baseball field, and it goes out in a counter-clockwise direction around the property. It ends at the ninth hole over in the soccer fields.

“I think it turned out great,” Brumley said. “We’re still working on putting a few little things in here and there — some of those signage things and whatnot, but the feedback that I’ve gotten is that people are enjoying it, so I think it turned out very nice. I have not played it yet, but a friend of mine has bought some discs and we plan to give it a try when it gets a little warmer.”

Brumley said they are thinking about offering disc, also called frisbees, for rent at the pool concession stand in the spring and summer seasons for people looking to give the sport a try.

“It just looks fun. When we first put it in, we asked ourselves, ‘What is disc golf?’” Brumley said. “Then you start looking into it and then you find out just how expansive it is. When you look up ‘disc,’ you’ll find five or six different discs for disc golf: you have a putter and a driver, just like regular golf, but you don’t have to go to a big golf course.”

His goal is to continue adding more recreational opportunities for the community.

“I think it’s a perfect fit. When I look at this park, and I’m looking at the recreation, I want to get people out here, keeping them active and engaged, ” Brumley said. “The course is out here next to the trail group’s project (the Upshur County Trails system), and I think it fits in great. The trails group members are always up here doing things, so they’re looking at getting people together up here at the beginning of the year, in January for another big group project.”

He hopes to have more programs to announce soon.

“I’m starting to come up with different programs to implement, and I can’t really speak too much on them because they’re still in the basic drawing phase, but I’m starting to try to put together some programs for the community, because I do feel like that’s something we’re lacking here,” Brumley said.
