Tennis Lady Bucs win three matches in two days

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur tennis Lady Bucs finally broke into the win column during a busy three-day stretch last week.

The Lady Bucs played a home doubleheader last Monday and picked up their first win of the season beating Fairmont Senior by a 4-2 score. Earlier in the day, they lost a 7-0 decision to Philip Barbour.

They competed in another doubleheader on Tuesday, earning a road sweep against Robert C. Byrd and Grafton.

They downed Robert C. Byrd by a 5-2 score and bested Grafton by a 5-1 count.

On Wednesday, they dropped a 7-0 road decision to Bridgeport.

The action left the Lady Bucs with a 3-9 record.

In their win over Fairmont Senior, Tori Adams at No. 1, Madelyn Frye at No. 2 and Alexa Davis at No. 4 all picked up singles victories while Frye and Davis earned a doubles win at No. 2.

“I’m really proud of how the girls competed in the doubleheader,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “I knew Philip Barbour was a solid team but that we would have a really good chance against Fairmont Senior to get some wins as a team. Tori got her first win at No. 1 singles which was really exciting. She is a “winner” already in my book with how hard she has worked to be the best she can be on the court and it finally paid off with a win. It was also great seeing Madelyn and Alexa finish the night with not only a few wins but 8-0 dominating wins.”

In Tuesday’s win against Robert C. Byrd, the Lady Bucs earned two single victories – Frye at No. 3 and Davis at No. 4 and got two doubles wins as Adams and Lainey Rowan won at No. 1 and Frye and Davis won at No. 2.

They swept doubles action as Adams and Rowan at No. 1, Frye and Davis at No. 2 and Mya Critchfield and Cate O’Neill were all triumphant.

Buckhannon-Upshur earned three singles victories against Grafton (Rowan at No. 2, Frye at No. 3 and Davis at No. 4) while Adams and Rowan at No. 1 and Frye and Davis at No. 2 doubles both won by forfeit.

“I knew RCB would be another chance for our girls to really compete and gain confidence on the court,” remarked Rock. “We started the evening with all three doubles teams winning which hasn’t happened on the girls’ side in years so that was really great for our team. Mya and Cate got their first win at No. 3 doubles which is a testament to how much those ladies have improved since the beginning of the season having never played before. Grafton had a smaller team and everyone was tired and wanted to go home at this point, but Madelyn and Alexa fought for every point and won easily in their singles matches. Those two are the leaders of a young girl’s team and to see them giving it their all two nights in a row and it paying off with wins is great for the future of our team.”

Despite not winning a match against Bridgeport, Rock said he saw improvement in his team.

“Last year, we were a walk in the park for Bridgeport, but this year their girls were coming off the courts having to work for every point which means our girls are moving in the right direction.”

The Lady Bucs were slated to finish off a busy week last week at Lewis County on Thursday and at John Marshall on Saturday.

They will be home Monday against Elkins and will visit Morgantown on Tuesday.
