Baseball ‘Cats drop road twin bill to Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan (3-38, 3-27) baseball team dropped a road doubleheader to Davis & Elkins (8-34, 5-25) on Thursday at Harpertown Field.
 
Inside Game One
Adrian Delgado ripped a single in the first inning for the Bobcats with two outs. Eli Brogan struck out the side in the bottom of the first inning to keep the Senators off the scoreboard. Geovani Sostre knocked a base hit to center field with one out in the second. WVWC had runners at the corners with two outs but were unable to cash in. D&E went down in order in the bottom of the second inning and the game remained scoreless.
 
The home team broke the tie in the third inning after a two out double put the Senators ahead 1-0. Cole Shearer led the top of the fifth inning with a base hit and advanced to second following a sacrifice bunt. Shearer was stranded at second and D&E maintained the lead. The Senators added a run in the bottom half of the inning. Delgado recorded his second hit of game one with a double in the sixth inning. Sostre led off the seventh with a base hit. The Bobcats could not score and D&E won game one, 2-0.
 
Brogan pitched six innings of work and sat down six D&E hitters while allowing five hits and two earned runs.
 
Inside Game Two
WVWC generated four runs in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Julio Aguilar rocked a base hit to left field. Nick Corwell drew a walk which put Aguilar in scoring position. Preston Todd reached on an infield single and Aguilar scored on a D&E throwing error. Two batters later, Sam Ingram drove in Corwell with a single. Jack Tilton delivered a two-RBI hit to right that put WVWC ahead 4-0 after two innings of play.
 
The game remained at the 4-0 mark until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Senators closed the gap to a one-run deficit. D&E took the lead in the fifth inning after scoring a pair of runs. Ingram led off the seventh inning and reached first base on catcher’s interference. Tilton laid down a sacrifice bunt and put Ingram in scoring position. Delgado singled and Ingram moved to third. Ingram scored on a D&E error that tied the game at five. The Senators did not score in the seventh and the game was sent to extra innings. D&E scored a run in the eighth inning and won game two, 6-5.

The Bobcats were set to conclude the 2022 season at Hank Ellis Field on Sunday (May 8) for a doubleheader versus Davis & Elkins.
