West Virginia reports 2,296 active COVID cases, three new deaths on Friday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 2,296 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 217 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (37), Barbour (21), Lewis (12), Randolph (20) and Webster (5) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of one active case in the last 24 hours. 

Three additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 90-year old female from Berkeley County, a 79-year old female from Berkeley County, and a 74-year old female from Raleigh County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 20, 2022, there are currently 2,296 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been three deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,915 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 152 residents are hospitalized with the virus (45% unvaccinated, 55% vaccinated), with 19 currently in intensive care (32% unvaccinated, 68% vaccinated) and 11 on a ventilator (46% unvaccinated, 54% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 8.14%. 

A total of 977,247 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 489,608 booster doses have been administered.
