Artistry on Main – Artist Spotlight: Brandi Losh

BUCKHANNON – Artistry on Main is home to several West Virginia artists and their work. Through this column, receive a behind-the-curtain view of the background and inspirations of each local artist. See their work — and sometimes the artists themselves — at Artistry on Main, 27 E. Main Street in Buckhannon.

Meet Brandi Losh of Art by BLUSH. Losh is a mixed media artist using a variety of mediums to create her one-of-a-kind pieces: acrylic paint, watercolors, inks, gouache, air dry clay, collage, crayons, pencils, charcoal, pastels, graphic design, to most recently carving pieces before painting them with water-soluble crayons.

“I have recently been exploring more muted color palettes that I do not use normally and have found them to be just as joyful as my neon and bright colors,” said Losh.

The magical world of art is no stranger to Losh, as her mother is also an artist. Brandi began her creative journey as early as three years old. Art became a bonding time for Losh and her mother while they would paint and draw. Her passion for the arts continued onto higher education opportunities at Marshall University where Losh graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in advertising and a minor in graphic design.

“I put my artwork away for about 15 years, but picked it back up when my daughter was about 12 and wanted to start painting,” said Losh. “Once I started it was like a fountain, I couldn’t stop, and during the pandemic it was a life saver. I started taking a variety of classes online during the pandemic and I have seen a huge improvement in my art. It was one of the best decisions that I had ever made.”

Losh finds inspiration all around her. Whether that inspiration stems from life at home to traveling on the road, her creative mind is always working toward the next piece of art. Losh expressed, “I like to enhance the mundane to tell a more whimsical and joyful story.”

“[Art] is my way of changing the world as people see it. Thinking out of the box and inciting joy through my whimsical characters and bright colored pieces,” said Losh. “Art makes you think and feel. I want my artwork to give my audience happiness and think about the world around them in a more positive light.”
