WVWC volleyball falls in five sets to Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team (5-11, 1-2 Mountain East Conference) fell on the road versus Glenville State (12-7, 1-2 MEC) on Tuesday (Sept. 27) inside the Waco Center.

WVWC Leaders
Hope Arce-Reed led the Lady Bobcats with 15 kills. Mya Bajramovic added 11 kills and two blocks. Payton Hefner passed 21 assists. Joelle Lalla and Najla Bray each had three blocks. Autumn Molenhouse led the Lady Bobcats with 12 digs.

Inside Set One
The Pioneers jumped out to a 6-2 lead in set one. Wesleyan fired off eight straight points and led 10-6, forcing a GSU timeout. WVWC extended its lead to 14-7. The Pioneers didn’t back away. The home team fought back to tie the game 19-19 after two runs of three or more points.

The Lady Bobcats responded with a run of their own to lead 22-19. Autumn Molenhouse took charge for the Lady Bobcats tallying two kills in the final six points and the Bobcats won set one, 25-22.

Inside Set Two
Glenville State controlled set two from start to finish. The Pioneers led 8-2 after ten possible points. WVWC rattled off three points and trailed 8-5. GSU responded with a run of three and led 11-5. A kill from Bajramovic cut the deficit to four. After a four-point run, the Pioneers led 20-11 before winning set two, 25-17.

Inside Set Three
Set three featured 13 tied scores and seven lead changes. The largest lead in set three was owned by GSU at 10-5. WVWC scored seven of the next nine points to tie the score 12-12. The two teams exchanged the next 14 points to remain tied at 19-19.

The Pioneers scored two straight points to lead 21-19. A kill and a block from Bajramovic brought the Lady Bobcats back in the set and evened the score at 21. Arce-Reed kept the momentum in WVWC’s favor by firing home two kills, including the final point of the set, and the Lady Bobcats won set three, 25-23.

Inside Set Four
Knotted up at 4-4 early in set two, GSU took the lead and never looked back. The Pioneers doubled up on the Lady Bobcats lead at 14-7. A run of four left the Lady Bobcats trailing 17-13. Glenville State took eight of the remaining 12 points to win set four, 25-17.

Inside Set Five
The Pioneers led 3-1 to start the fifth set. WVWC scored two points on a service ace from Alexis Moeschler and a block from Bajrmavoic and Joelle Lalla to tie the score 3-3. After exchanging the next four possessions, GSU scored four straight to lead 10-6. The Pioneers scored five of the remaining seven points to win set five, 15-8.

WVWC returns to its home court to face West Virginia State on Friday (Sept. 30) at 7 p.m. in the Rockefeller Center.
