BUCKHANNON — In a showcase of community spirit and service, the Band of Brothers, a philanthropic group from Upshur County, has been recognized with a Governor’s Service Award. The award ceremony took place on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston.

The Band of Brothers initially declined the nomination by the Upshur County Commission. Their commitment has consistently been to serve without seeking recognition, aiming to give all glory to their faith. However, upon further reflection, the group saw the nomination as an opportunity to highlight how community-driven efforts can inspire others to take action.

During the ceremony, members of the group, along with their spouses, were present to accept the award. Notable attendees included Kristie Tenney, who nominated the group, and her husband JP, as well as Deanna Gillum and Marilyn Keith. The event also served as a moment to honor the memories of Dorse Gillum and Steve Foster, both of whom were pivotal to the group’s successes and passed away last year.

The emotional ceremony featured stories from other recipients that moved many attendees to tears, highlighting the profound impact of community service. The Band of Brothers emphasized that the recognition extends beyond their group to the entire community of Upshur County and their supporters statewide.

“It is truly a community recognition,” the group said in a social media post on the award. “The people of Upshur County, surrounding counties, across the state, and friends far and wide not only make us look good, but more importantly, make a difference in needy people and disadvantaged kids’ lives locally, statewide, and in several impoverished countries.”
