BUCKHANNON — In its final home match of the 2024 season, West Virginia Wesleyan men’s soccer played non-conference Salem University to a 1-1 tie, Wednesday in Buckhannon.
In the 18th minute, Chiedozie Ozo-Undeze was taken down inside the 18 and was awarded the penalty kick opportunity which he buried top-shelf to put the Bobcats up early.
But a direct kick set play from just outside the penalty box four minutes later, gave Salem’s Felipe Gonzalez Maldonado a shot which curled around the Wesleyan wall to find the goal’s top corner.
The penalty-riddled game ended with five yellows to the Bobcats and three to Salem, including cards on both team’s coaches.
The Bobcat men remain in the fifth spot in the Mountain East Conference table, just one point ahead of both West Liberty University and Point Park University. Only the top six go into post-season play.
An away match at 1 p.m. with West Liberty this Sunday, Nov. 3 will go a long way in determining whether the Bobcats sit out of the conference playoffs. The Hilltoppers and Bobcats tied in their first match of the year, 1-1.
