Basketball ‘Cats split games with Glenville State and Charleston

BUCKHANNON — The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat men’s basketball team picked up its first Mountain East Conference victory over Glenville State University 84-78.

Solid performances by Alex Mirhosseini, Michael Batchelor and Anthony Crosby led the Bobcat scoring attack that molded a 17-point lead three minutes into the second half. But a slew of personal fouls and turnovers late in the game helped the Pioneers pull to within six with a dozen seconds remaining.

Mirhosseini shot only 5-of-13 from the field but five were from three-point country and he was at the foul line often, dropping 11-of-16 from the charity stripe for a game-high 25-point total. He added six rebounds and eight assists.

Batchelor also contributed three-pointers and foul shots, going 4-of-8 from outside the perimeter and completing 5-of-6 from the free throw line for a 21-point total.

Crosby had a season-high 18 points and a season-high eight rebounds to go along with 6-of-8 free throws and two steals.

Glenville was led by Ammar Maxwell who had 16 points, three rebounds and an assist, and Samier Kinsler who recorded 16 points and three rebounds. Prince Mosengo led all rebounders with nine and added nine points.

The West Virginia Wesleyan men dropped a Mountain East Conference match up with the University of Charleston Wednesday, 82-65, in the Rockefeller Center.

Field goal percentage was dead-even at 42 percent for each team and Wesleyan held the three-point success advantage, hitting 35 percent from outside the arc to Charleston’s 23, but the big lopsided statistic was turnovers: Wesleyan committed 20 while Charleston had just seven.

Senior Anthony Crosby led the Bobcat attack, posting a season-best 19 points, just one more than his previous best (18) against Glenville State last Saturday. His steady 7-of-8 performance, including a pair of 3-pointers, helped Wesleyan remain close through the first 20 minutes of play.

Senior Alex Mirhosseini who ranks ninth in the MEC with 16.1 point-per-game, had 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting and added three assists and five rebounds.

Charleston’s Matthew Shelton led the Golden Eagles with 24 points and four rebounds. Ja’Corey Lipkins had 19 points and five rebounds. Trevor Barrett had 11 points and six rebounds. Dwaine Jones, who leads the league in assists, topped the stat chart with 12 dishes.
