High school basketball player arrested on malicious assault charges

An 18-year-old high school basketball player was arrested for malicious assault after allegedly using his elbow to target other players during a game in Grant County.

On Thursday, February 27, 2025, at approximately 9:41 p.m., Corporal Charles S. Hartman of the Moorefield/Petersburg Detachment received a complaint from Melissa Streets about her juvenile son (17-years-old) being assaulted at a basketball game at Union High School in Grant County the prior evening, according to a press release from the West Virginia State Police.

She further advised her son was transported to the hospital for “profuse bleeding” and was later diagnosed with a broken nose.

She indicated the incident was on video and the player’s actions were intentional and unacceptable. She provided video of this incident to Corporal Hartman along with other video showing the same boy being aggressive multiple times. She advised she wished to pursue criminal charges.

Corporal Hartman later reviewed video sent to him and found that the player in question, identified as Gage Ketterman, 18-years-old, could be seen using his elbow to single out and target players from the opposing team; either after or away from the main area of play and strike them in the head or face.

Corporal Hartman determined Ketterman’s conduct was both intentional and deliberate in attempting to cause serious bodily injury to more than one individual, numerous times that evening.

On Sunday, April 6, 2025, Gage Ketterman was arrested and charged with malicious assault and two counts of attempted malicious assault.
