Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia decline by 28% in last week

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 15,490 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 1,608 since Friday’s report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (151), Barbour (139), Lewis (82), Randolph (153) and Webster (63) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of nine active cases over the weekend.

Twenty additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 56-year old female from Mercer County, a 76-year old male from Jackson County, a 72-year old male from Ohio County, a 79-year old male from Jefferson County, a 54-year old male from Kanawha County, a 74-year old male from Harrison County, a 42-year old male from Roane County, an 86-year old male from Monongalia County, a 52-year old female from Jefferson County, a 74-year old male from Pleasants County, a 74-year old male from Kanawha County, a 61-year old female from Monongalia County, a 57-year old female from Berkeley County, a 74-year old male from Jefferson County, a 60-year old female from Randolph County, a 79-year old female from Mineral County, a 79-year old male from Marion County, a 48-year old female from Mineral County, a 92-year old male from Raleigh County, and a 67-year old male from Ohio County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of January 31, 2022, there are currently 15,490 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 20 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,763 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 1,070 residents are hospitalized with the virus (69% unvaccinated, 31% vaccinated), with 235 currently in intensive care (66% unvaccinated, 34% vaccinated) and 116 on a ventilator (85% unvaccinated, 15% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 17.46%.

A total of 950,929 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said. That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 382,138 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
