On Saturday, March 29, American Legion Post 7 in Buckhannon will recognize our Veterans who served any period between November 1955 to April 1975. Everyone is invited whether you are a veteran or not. We will be serving ham and beans, cornbread, dessert, and drinks for $5. Children 5 and under are free. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. All funds raised go to support the veterans and their surviving spouses in Upshur County.
National Vietnam War Veterans Day was Proclaimed to be March 29 in 2012. That was the date the last units of the US Military Assistance Command and the last US combat troops are said to have departed Vietnam in 1973. But it wasn’t until March 28, 2017, that the President signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017. This act officially made March 29 National Vietnam War Veterans Day. As we do on Veterans Day and Independence Day, the US Flag should be displayed in as many locations as possible.
It is estimated that only 30% of our Vietnam Veterans are alive today. During the war West Virginia had the highest losses per capita of any state in the nation with 42 per 100,000 residents having been killed. New Mexico was next with 39 of 100,000.
The Luncheon is being conducted in collaboration with West Virginia Hospice who supports our area veterans in a variety of ways. Even if you aren’t hungry and just want to stop in and chat with a fellow veteran you are invited.
The luncheon will be held at the Post 7 home 16 S Kanawha Buckhannon, WV. The Post home is located next to the old Kanawha Theater. For more information you can call the Post any morning Monday thru Friday at 304-460-7377.
