Gary Powers, age 72, of Buckhannon, WV, passed from this world to his new home to spend eternity in Heaven on April 22, 2023. He was at home surrounded by his loving family after a hard-fought battle.
He was born November 5, 1950, in Buckhannon. Gary was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and a respected member of the Buckhannon community. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Charles H. Powers; brother, Charles “Wayne” Powers; sister-in-law, Shirley “Jeannie” Dean Gainer; mother and father-in-law, Howard and Caroldeen Dean.
He leaves behind his wife, Sherry Dean Powers, whom he loved and cherished for 53 years; his son David Powers and wife Leslie; grandson, Chase Powers; his beloved dog, Lucy; brother, Paul Powers and wife Deborah of Las Vegas, NV; sisters-in-law, Sandi and Virgil LaRosa, Shelia and Chuck Barkley of Little River, SC; brother-in-law, Howard Dean of Buckhannon and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Gary also had special friends that he loved dearly, Johnny and Ginny Smith, Brian and Penny Parcell and his church family.
Gary graduated from Buckhannon Upshur High School with the class of 1968. He worked for Home Hardware for many years before starting his own business, Powers Construction, with his son David. The business is now being run by his son, David and grandson, Chase Powers. Gary attended and belonged to the Sand Run Baptist Church in Excelsior, WV. He helped Sherry with running the kitchen at Fisher Baptist Camp in Weston, which he truly enjoyed.
Gary loved hunting, fishing, golfing and camping with friends. He also enjoyed playing games, especially card games, with his friends whom he frequently beat.
Gary’s wishes for cremation and no funeral service will be honored. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, April 30, 2023, at 3 PM at the Sand Run Baptist Church in Excelsior.
