Million dollar lottery ticket sold in Buckhannon

Upshur County residents, check your lottery tickets – you could be $1 million richer.

The West Virginia Lottery confirmed Wednesday afternoon that a $1 million winning ticket in Tuesday’s MegaMillions drawing was sold in Buckhannon. The winning numbers were 22-30-53-55-56 with a Mega Ball of 16.

“Somebody matched five numbers in last night’s MegaMillions,” said Randy Burnside, public relations manager at W.Va. Lottery. “They just missed the Mega Ball or they would have shared in the jackpot. A ticket in Ohio matched all six numbers and won the large jackpot.”

Tuesday’s jackpot was $372 million dollars. In addition to the lone jackpot winner, one ticket sold in Pennsylvania won $2 million and three tickets matched million-dollar prizes. Those were sold in Buckhannon, New York and Iowa.

The Buckhannon winner has not yet come forward to claim their prize.

“They have 180 days from the draw date to claim before the ticket expires,” Burnside told My Buckhannon. “We’re recommending the person or persons, whoever holds that lucky ticket, sign the back of the ticket and contact us here at West Virginia Lottery about how to claim. They’ll have to come to Charleston.”

The West Virginia Lottery phone number is 304-558-0500.

Because the prize is a million dollars, the winner or winners can remain anonymous, according to Burnside.

“Under state law, if you win a prize of a million or more you can remain anonymous,” he said.

The store that sold the lucky ticket has not been announced yet, Burnside added, saying that as a security precaution they wait 24 hours before making that information public.
