BUCKHANNON – My Buckhannon is proud to present another edition of the Hank Ellis All-Stars. Each week we will select a female and male athlete at Buckhannon-Upshur that has had an exemplary week on the basketball court, the swimming pool or the wrestling mat.
Our Hank Ellis All-Stars for the week of Feb. 13 – Feb. 19 are Preston Bennett and Cadence Vincent.
Both are senior swimmers for the Bucs and Lady Bucs and both went out in style in the West Virginia High School State Swimming Championships held last week in Morgantown.
Bennett captured a solo gold in the 200-yard freestyle after rallying in the finals, where he dropped five seconds off his preliminary time to win in 1:42.81. He then claimed silver in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:45.30.
Bennett joined Carter Zuliani, Owen Caynor and Reis Leonard to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:31.91. The same squad finished third in the 200-yard medley relay, turning in a time of 1:42.69.
Vincent claimed individual gold medals in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events while setting new state records in each. Her new times of 22.95 and 49.91 are now the marks to beat.
Vincent also brought home a silver medal as part of the 200-yard medley relay team, where she was joined by Rylee Yardley, Alayna Whitehair and Lillian Fetty. The quartet placed second with a time of 1:57.71. The same group earned bronze medals in the 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:44.88.
Congratulations to Bennett and Vincent as our weekly winners of the Hank Ellis All-Stars honor.
