Upshur Stars presented to B-UHS swimmers and wrestlers

Upshur Stars are presented by Upshur County Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. Debra Harrison to Buckhannon-Upshur High School wrestling state qualifiers and their coaches during Tuesday’s Upshur County Board of Education meeting held at the school. Qualifiers include Nathan Tyson, Ian Cornett, Liam Garcia, Aidan Wilson, Brodie Kennedy, Tucker Hurst, Andrew McDowell, Nathan Cornett, Luke Bohnsack, Trevor Randolph and Oscar Blonn. TENNERTON – During the acknowledgments and highlights portion of last Tuesday’s Upshur County Board of Education meeting, members learned not only about the athletic achievements of some of the Buckhannon-Upshur High School students, but also that they are high-achieving academically. State qualifiers in wrestling and boys and girls swimming were awarded Upshur Stars for their accomplishments and being stellar scholar-athletes.

Upshur County Assistant Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Harrison welcomed and congratulated each of the athletes from what were described as two of the most successful sports at Buckhannon-Upshur High School – the swim team and the wrestling team.

Director of Wellness and Child Nutrition Eddie Vincent first introduced the wrestling team and coaching staff and said they had done very well representing the school and county as state qualifiers. Head coach Jacob Orr said the team had participated the previous weekend at the state meet.

“It is always hard to see the season end,” Orr said. “When November hits it seems like March will take forever to get here, and all of a sudden March is here and you are not sure where the season went.”

Orr introduced the student-althetes –Nathan Tyson, Ian Cornett, Liam Garcia, Aidan Wilson, Brodie Kennedy, Tucker Hurst, Andrew McDowell, Nathan Cornett, Luke Bohnsack, Trevor Randolph and Oscar Blonn.

BOE President Dr. Tammy Samples offered her congratulations to the wrestling team and said she knew how hard they worked to achieve their success.

B-UHS Swim Coach Michael Roessing introduced his state qualifiers, including girls Lillian Fetty, Riley Vincent, Cadence Vincent, Alayna Whitehair and Cameron Zuliani, and boys Owen Caynor, Reis Leonard, Preston Bennett and Carter Zuliani. Roessing praised his scholar-athletes.

“All of these individuals up here have a GPA over 3.0,” Roessing said. “Two of them have over a 3.5 GPA and five of them have over a 4.0 GPA.”

During meeting of the Upshur County BOE, members are introduced to students, teachers, staff and volunteers who go over and above to make Upshur County Schools the best they can be. Those individuals recognized are presented with ‘Upshur Stars’ in recognition of their contributions and efforts.
