INSTITUTE — The West Virginia Wesleyan women got back to winning with a 74-63 road victory over West Virginia State University, Monday.
After a two-day delay due to frigid weather (postponed from Saturday), the Bobcats found a shooting stride and faired even on rebounds with the Yellow Jackets compared to recent contests in which they lost three-straight. Wesleyan hit 53 percent of its field goals and grabbed 38 rebounds. State hit a meager 31 percent of its shots and handled 39 rebounds.
The biggest challenge for the Bobcats was its 27 turnovers. With State using full-team substitutions, Yellow Jacket fresh legs tested Bobcat passing as a full-court press was on for much of the game. State also dominated the offensive boards, pulling away 23 to Wesleyan’s 12.
Double-digit performances from four ‘Cats included 26 points from team-leader Emma Witt who also grabbed eight rebounds and shuffled four assists. Desiree Roy had 16 points and added seven rebounds to her tenth-place conference total of 96. Shelby Genes hit 4-of-8 for 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Sydney Baird, second on the team in total points (217) had 10 points, three rebounds and two assists.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Emyah Fortenberry who had a double-double performance of 14 points and 15 rebounds. Shanley Woods added 12 points.
Wesleyan returns to the Rockefeller Center for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff with Frostburg State University Wednesday, January 22.
