The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced a record single-day increase in the number of people who have died from COVID-19 on Tuesday, saying 42 additional West Virginians have succumbed to the virus.
A total of 1,400 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State, the DHHR added. The positivity percentage was above 10% on Tuesday.
After a quiet day with no new cases on Monday, Upshur County reported a record increase on Tuesday, with 29 new cases. The daily positivity percentage Monday for Upshur County was 36% and the county remains red on the alert map.
Locally, new cases were also reported in Barbour (7), Lewis (15) and Randolph (15) counties.
A total of 114 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. Tuesday’s update:
- Added 18 probable and nine confirmed cases on Dec. 21
- Added one probable and two confirmed cases on Dec. 20
- Removed one probable and added one confirmed case on Dec. 19
- Added one probable case and removed four confirmed cases from Dec. 18
- Removed one probable and added one confirmed case to Dec. 17
- Added one confirmed case to Dec. 16

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of December 22, 2020, there have been 1,404,107 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 74,737 total cases and 1,171 deaths,” according to a press release.
About 22,864 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 50,338 people have recovered and 1,171 have died. The daily percent positive was 10.25%.
