Weekly Recap: Family favorites return as busy summer event season kicks off

The first weekend in June marked the unofficial start to summer, with many of Buckhannon’s favorite events returning to town.

Last week, My Buckhannon previewed Festival Fridays, the Farmer’s Market, Young Eagles Day and the Miss West Virginia USA pageants, and we worked with the CVB to compile a large list of local events occurring throughout the entire month of June.

We also reported on several other events coming up: the Bill Proudfoot Memorial Motorcycle Ride and Car Show, the Parish House 30th Anniversary Celebration, the Leadership Upshur class, the Gray Barker Liars Contest, Davis Health’s 100 Miles in 100 Days wellness program, and Canaan Valley’s summer/fall guided hike series.

So much cool stuff happening!

My Buckhannon launched another new feature for our premium members this week: online crosswords. These are custom designed by the MyB team and can be completed on your phone, tablet or computer. We hope you enjoy them!

And while we’re having fun, did you see the photo of the new state record blue catfish, weighing 67 pounds? Wow!

In healthcare news this week, we posted stories about Bonnie’s Bus offering mammograms in Rock Cave, Jeffrey Jenkins joining Community Care as the new CFO, St. Joseph’s Hospital revising their COVID-19 testing procedures and Davis and Elkins College picking up kudos for their nursing program.

West Virginia Wesleyan College, meanwhile, announced their spring Dean’s List, and Upshur County Schools celebrated the county’s removal from the state financial watch list. The Upshur County Board of Education also outlined a revamped plan to build a new middle school.

We also hope you read our stories on city firefighters being honored with ‘stork pins’ for assisting with local births, as well as a new co-op that seeks to make transitioning to solar power more affordable for local residents and businesses.

In sports last week, My Buckhannon brought you stories on the new B-UHS Athletic Hall of Fame class, free sports physicals, lacrosse all-state and all-star honors, this year’s the John L. Tenney Memorial Baseball Award winner and the first full day of action at the Elkins Raceway.

We’ve got another exciting week in store as our team brings you the stories that shape Upshur County. As always, thanks for reading My Buckhannon!
